John W. & Edna Wilson Mosley Scholarship
This scholarship program aims to assist African American students from East High School attend their first year at the college, university, or other accredited post-secondary school of their choice.
Eligibility:
Students who meet ALL of the following criteria are encouraged to apply.
- Be a graduating, African American senior from East High School
- Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
- Planning to attend a college, university, or other accredited post-secondary school in the 2020-2021 academic year
Selection: Recipients will be selected based on their academic achievement, extracurricular activities & leadership, letters of recommendation, personal essays, and their financial need. Finalists will be asked to complete an in-person interview with the selection committee in April that will also be taken into consideration in the selection process.
Award: Two selected recipients will receive one-time scholarship awards in the amount of $2,000. Awards can be used for tuition, fees, books, room and board, and other required educational expenses. All scholarships will be paid directly to a recipient’s school, and must be used for the upcoming academic year. Award disbursement is contingent upon the outside scholarship policies of a recipient’s college or university.

- Resume- Please upload a copy of your resume. Your resume should detail your education, work experience, sports, clubs, volunteer work/community service, as well as include any academic or leadership awards and honors you have received or special programs you have participated in. Be sure to list your roles and responsibilities (if applicable) with each opportunity listed and include your length of time of participation (i.e. Boy Scouts of America, January 2012-present; National Honor Society, March 2014 - May 2016).
- In a two page, double spaced essay, reflect on your personal story and share what it means to be resilient. How has this influenced your short and long term career goals?
- Community can defined as a group of people who share a common interest, location/space, or ideas. For example, your community can be the school you attend, the neighborhood you live in, or the church you participate with. Thinking of the communities that you are a part of, please upload no more than a two page, double spaced essay that describes who you consider to be a leader in your community and why?
- Reference Request 1: Please request a reference from a current EAST HIGH SCHOOL teacher, coach, community leader, or student/club advisor who knows you well. Your reference will be asked to describe your character, motivation to further your education, your school and community involvement, and your potential for success. This process is initiated by you, the applicant, from within the online application. You are responsible for ensuring that your reference completes this request prior to the scholarship application deadline. Insert the name and email address of your reference into the fields provided. Immediately when you save your application, a secure link with specific reference questions will be sent to your recommender. This needs to be done in ADVANCE of submitting your application. The deadline for references is the same as your scholarship application deadline.
- Reference Request 2 (Community Member): Please request a reference from a member of your community. This might be a pastor of your church, a neighbor you babysit for, or someone that you have volunteered for.Your reference will be asked to describe your participation in the community outside of your school and the ways in which you have made an impact. This process is initiated by you, the applicant, from within the online application. You are responsible for ensuring that your reference completes this request prior to the scholarship application deadline. Insert the name and email address of your reference into the fields provided. Immediately when you save your application, a secure link with specific reference questions will be sent to your reference. This needs to be done in ADVANCE of submitting your application. The deadline for references is the same as your scholarship application deadline.
